IBM y sus planes para una Supercomputadora de 100PFlops

IBM Has Plans for a 100 PFlop Supercomputer

A patent filing details IBM's plans to take the building blocks of the Sequoia supercomputer to a performance level of 100 PFlop/s.


According to the document, which stretches over 649 pages, IBM describes a BlueGene/Q system that is based on 524,288 processing nodes with 16-core PowerPC A2 processors that are able to handle 64 threads each. The system would include almost 8.4 million processing cores that are organized in 512 racks. The targeted performance is a peak of 107 PFlop/s.

The BlueGene/Q Sequoia supercomputer IBM is currently building for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory will use about 1.6 million A2 processing cores in 96 racks. The patent claims that each processing node will consume about 30 watts of power, which puts the 107 PFlop/s system at only 15.7 MW. That is rather impressive for a system with more than 8 million CPU cores.

The patent suggests that IBM has big plans with BlueGene/Q and especially its 5D torus network that connects the computing nodes among each other. There was no information when such a 100+ PFlop/s system could become reality. Sequoia is scheduled to go online in 2012 with a peak performance of about 20 PFlop/s.

Seagate Ships World's First 4TB External HDD


Just over a year ago Seagate introduced the world’s first 3TB hard drive. Although it shipped in an enclosure for external use, the Seagate GoFlex Desk was available with the very first 3.5” 3TB SATA hard drive. A couple of months later Seagate and Western Digital both followed up with standalone internal 3TB hard drives.
Today we’re reminded of that announcement as Seagate unveiled the world’s first 4TB hard drive. Once again the drive comes to us first in a GoFlex Desk enclosure with native USB 3.0 support. There’s an optional FireWire 800/USB 2.0 dock available using Seagate’s standard GoFlex connector. The GoFlex dock itself has four LEDs that give a rough indication of capacity.

The 4TB model retails for $249.99 and is available immediately with a 2-year warranty. In our review of last year’s 3TB version we were particularly concerned with how hot the 3TB drive was able to get inside the enclosure. Adequate ventilation is a concern for the 3.5” GoFlex Desk chassis and something we’ll have to reevaluate once we get our hands on a review sample. 

The drive inside features five 800GB platters spinning at 7200RPM with a 64MB buffer. Just like before, it's a SATA Barracuda XT inside of a GoFlex Desk chassis. If last year’s 3TB model is any indication however, we shouldn’t expect to find a performance optimized drive inside. Seagate will save that for the internal version in the months ahead.

MSI Develops Dust Removal Technology for Graphics Cards

Of late, MSI has been at the forefront of graphics card innovations. The latest is what the company refers to as "Dust Removal Technology". Dust buildup on the surface of heatsink fins can reduce cooling efficiency. Without giving us too many details about its testing, MSI claims that a clean cooler can keep temperatures down by as much as 15°C. Dust Removal Technology uses a simple method of running fans in the opposite rotation, drawing air from the heatsink and pushing it out through its intakes, with 100% fan speed for 30 seconds at system startup can work to reduce dust accumulation in the tough to clean parts of the cooler. Since the "dust removal" happens on each system startup, cleaning happens on a very regular basis. MSI plans to implement the Dust Removal Technology on all its new and upcoming graphics cards.
